AFCON 2021: Man City’s Mahrez to lead Algeria once again

Na Angu Lesley – Cameroon

Algerian striker Riyad Mahrez is expected to captain his country once again in Article 33 of the TotalErnegies Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6.

The 30-year-old Manchester City midfielder led the team to their second continental title in 2019 when Algeria were African champions, beating Senegal 1-0.

He was included in their pre-AFCON selection as they aimed to retain the title.

Pep Guardiola will have to do without the 30-year-old for a long time even if he is absent, although Mahrez is the only member of his squad who will not be available for the time being.

Algeria who are scheduled for Group E will begin defending their title on January 11 against Sierra Leone before meeting Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast.

It should be noted that Qatar striker Baghdad Bounedjah, who scored their winning goal against Senegal in 2019, is part of coach Djamel Belmadi’s 28-man squad for the Total AFCON 2021 Energy.
